Meet Lisa Barden - New County Commissioner

On behalf of all members in Girlguiding Sussex Central County I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Deborah for being our County Commissioner for the last five years. Deborah has done a wonderful job visiting Units, Division and District events and helping at various County events, whilst representing us a Region. She has always been at the end of the telephone and emails when we have been in need of a chat or advice (and even storing our display boards in her garage!).

It is hard to believe that it is nearly five years since I took over from Jane Brown as County Secretary. I have enjoyed working with Deborah and the County Exec and I look forward to being the 7th County Commissioner for Sussex Central, working with the County Exec and our new President Judy and our Vice Presidents Clare, Deborah, Janet and Christine.

I am keen to meet you and your girls, so please do invite me to your meetings and events, also do feel free to email or text me if you have any questions or concerns and I will do my best to support you and find the answers. The next five years will see changes in Girlguiding with the new programme being rolled out, Safe Space and Senior Section but together we can face these challenges and do our best.

I started my guiding life as a 1st Cowfold Brownie where I was a Leprechaun before moving on to 1st Cowfold Guides. Whilst in Guides I learned to canoe at Southwater (and can still be found manning a stop watch at the canoe regattas) as well as gaining my Baden-Powell Award before working with as a Young Leader with 1st Cowfold Guides and 3rd Henfield Brownies.

Until last year I continued as an Assistant Leader with both units, causing much chaos at census (as it was then called) time as I had a foot in two Districts (this was well before GO! was thought of).

I love camping both indoors and out and have over the years helped many units to have a chance to camp.  I have held various roles and been lucky to have taken part in a variety of opportunities Guiding has offered; from visiting Our Chalet in Switzerland to Brownie Holidays at Butlin’s, Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph, Queens Jubilee Pageant to name but a few. I often say if you are in guiding you do not need to go to the gym, with all the lifting of chairs and tables, to the action songs and other games we play.
